Loneliness, Social Isolation Linked to Higher Mortality Risk
Feeling lonely and being socially isolated are both connected to a greater risk of death from any cause, a recent research review has confirmed. Overall, social isolation was found to raise mortality risk the most with an estimated 26% increase, while loneliness increased the risk of all-cause death by 14%.
The review included data from 90 separate studies that involved over 2,200,000 people. It defined social isolation as an objective limitation of social contact with other people and loneliness as a subjective feeling of wanting more social relationships.
Along with the increased risk of death from any cause for the two groups, researchers also specifically found a link between both groups and a greater cancer risk. Interestingly, only social isolation was associated with a higher risk of death from heart problems.
Addressing either of these challenges is not straightforward, especially for people with limited mobility. However, at least one study has shown that live video calls involving social interaction can decrease loneliness and offset some of the negative effects of being socially isolated.
Higher Lean Muscle Mass May Protect Against Alzheimer’s
Maintaining higher levels of lean muscle mass may help to reduce Alzheimer’s risk, according to a new study. Lower levels of lean muscle have previously been associated with a greater risk of Alzheimer’s disease, but it wasn’t clear whether they preceded or were a result of the disease itself.
The current study sought to determine whether there was a cause-and-effect link between the two by examining health data from a large number of participants (over 1,000,000) with and without Alzheimer’s disease.
Overall, the findings showed that lean muscle mass was connected to a “statistically robust” risk reduction for Alzheimer’s and was also associated with better performance on cognitive tasks.
Though the study authors caution that further research is needed to confirm these results, they believe that a focus on building lean mass, “potentially through campaigns to promote exercise and physical activity, might reduce the population burden of Alzheimer’s disease.”

Incredible Health Benefits of Catechins (+ Top Food Sources)
Catechins might just be some of the most potent, health-boosting compounds you never heard of. To put it simply, catechins are a group of protective antioxidants with natural anti-inflammation and free-radical-fighting properties. This makes them powerful against age-related diseases and solidifies them as top longevity-promoting compounds. Catechins are found most abundantly in tea— particularly green tea— as well as cacao, black grapes, red wine, strawberries, plums, broad beans, almonds, and apricots. (More)
You Could Be Throwing Out Your Food Too Soon
A recent study has found that up to half of consumers throw out perfectly good food. This appears to be due to the fact that many people use the date stamped on the food container to determine when to throw away food— regardless of whether the date is “sell by,” “best if used by,” or “use by.” In most cases, the date on food containers is an approximation of when food quality might start to degrade (sell-by date excepted). But there’s no need to throw food out at this date unless it actually has gone bad. (More)
Purple Vegetables, Tubers Possess Antidiabetic Properties
Anthocyanins are a specific type of antioxidant and plant compound that have been shown to help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Acetylated anthocyanins are believed to be even more effective for lowering diabetes risk than the nonacylated type. A recent review article highlights purple potatoes, purple sweet potatoes, purple carrots, red cabbage, and radishes as being foods with the highest contents of acylated anthocyanins. (More)
Lemon Balm Helps Ease Anxiety, Has Antiviral Properties
Lemon balm belongs to the mint family and has been used for health since at least the Middle Ages (and likely long before). Modern research has shown that this citrusy herb can help to improve mood, calm anxiety, and promote sleep, especially when combined with other herbs like valerian. Lemon balm has also shown benefits for digestion and even has antiviral activity that appears to be especially effective against the herpes simplex virus (the one that causes cold sores) and HIV. 10 Common Food and Medication Interactions to Avoid
Food and medicine don’t always get along. Some interactions can cause significant health issues and side effects that are best avoided. For example, combining Tylenol (acetaminophen) and alcohol increases your risk of liver damage, while metronidazole and alcohol can bring about severe vomiting. Other combinations to avoid include certain antibiotics and dairy, calcium channel blockers or statins and grapefruit, MAOIs and aged cheeses, and spironolactone and (real) licorice. (More)

The human eye contains around 7 million cone cells that make you able to see in color and 100 million rod cells that help you see in the dark. There are 3 types of cone cells— red-sensing, green-sensing, and blue-sensing— and the malfunction of just one type causes color blindness.
